Political Rap Database
In this lab, we will create a political rap database using criteria created by Lab Leader Lakeyta M. Bonnette-Bailey in her first book, Pulse of the People. This lab will become a resource for individuals studying political messaging in rap and the greater hip-hop culture.
Students will identify political rap songs through various means. Billboard singles charts, genre-specific magazines, music video broadcasts, and other industry publications will be consulted. As more and more entries are added to the database, students and researchers will be able to identify trends and perform corpus analysis on an ever-changing discourse within rap music.
