The Phoenix Project
The Phoenix Project is taking advantage of the MARTA Archaeological Collection, which is housed in the Anthropology Department’s Archaeology Lab. The collection resulted from archaeological investigations undertaken by GSU archaeologists in the late 1970s when the MARTA rail lines were constructed. This project recovered the material remains of Atlanta’s past and established the most comprehensive archaeological collection of Atlanta’s history. The work undertaken by students in the EPIC project lab will both expose them to Atlanta’s history and build basic research skills including archival research, data entry and database management, GIS, digital photography, 3D modeling, web-design, materials analyses and curation. The Lab will produce publicly shareable deliverables that will include exhibits (physical and online), K-12 educational materials, content for walking tours or podcasts. These could be linked to specific MARTA stations or local businesses where appropriate.
